Our Glass Stained Glass Studio was started by Nick Vogel in 1991. Born in 1964, Nick began working with colored glass and lead at an early age when he would "play" in his grandparents studio in East Moline, Illinois at holidays and during the summers. It was there he learned the basics of the craft, while participating in an intensive accelerated art program in Junior High and High School. A bachelor's degree in German from the University of Northern Iowa followed a year at the Southwest Guitar Conservatory in San Antonio and several years of travelling the country playing music. After earning his degree, Texas beckoned and he returned to Austin, spending the latter part of the 1980s and the early 1990's constructing custom homes and seeking a way to earn a living creating art. In 1991, Nick got back into the world of art glass when Floyd and Ruth Stockwell, his grandparents, then in their late '70's decided to get out of the stained glass business. They gave Nick and his former partner a good stock of glass and supplies and said "Pay us for it as you use it." They kept a ledger of inventory with the two main headings of "Their Glass" and "Our Glass". Soon the debt was paid and it was simply Our Glass. The first few years were filled with numerous arts and craft shows selling suncatchers, lamps and autonoumous, free hanging panels, peaking in 1995 with 45 shows in 52 weeks. Wanting to concentrate on larger and more creative work, in 1997 Nick left the craft show circuit. He has since completed over 200 commissions which are installed in more than 20 states. Our Glass now utilizes several artists and craftspeople to execute architectural glass, windows, autonomous panels and glass mosaics. We are ready to work with you and your clients to realize a shared vision of beauty and light.
