I don't know if this is strictly a religious
window, as it was installed in a pool room, but it does have
liturgical overtones. It's about 3' x 4'. The spectrum
"firelight" white I used in the wings doesn't really show up
as dramatically in the picture as it does in real
life.

Joppa Church Altar Windows
I was commissioned to make two windows for Joppa
Church, a little ways north of Austin. They're some of the
most intricate pieces I've done. They are approx. 18" wide
by 78" high. The design is very loosely based on several
Tiffany nature scene windows.

Virgin of Guadalupe Panel
I've done several versions of the Virgin of
Guadalupe. This was my first attempt at painted face and
hands.

The Holy Family Window
A panel mounted in a lightbox that was
commisioned for the Saint Mary's Catholic Church in
Grinnell, Iowa. The panel is my interpretation of
P.Barocci's "Rest on the Flight into Egypt". It is mounted
on an interior wall of the Holy Family Chapel at the
church.

|
|
A detail of the work. The panel measures
approximately 48 inches x 60 inches, and contains about 830
pieces. It took a lot of hard decisions on the glass
selection. Mary's dress is one of the parts with which I'm
particularly pleased.

An even closer detail. The pattern I came up
with has such small pieces in some parts of the faces that
some of the pieces are completely obscured by the
lead!

The Saint Francis Window
This window is installed at Saint Francis Manor,
a nursing home in Grinnell, Iowa. I am originally from
Grinnell, and my Grandmother (Frances Vogel) spent her final
days at Saint Francis Manor. The design was inspired greatly
by her deep faith, and love of nature. The image of St.
Francis in the design came mostly from a statue my mother in
law had. The lamb, wolf, and birds came from various
pictures I found.

This is a smaller detail of the 4 foot by 5 foot
window. I used at least 45 kinds of glass in this 537 piece
design.

An even more detailed shot of part of the
window.

Due to the regulations for nursing homes, it was
decided not to mount the window in a traditional 'window'
placement. All windows at the nursing home must open for
emergencies. I built a large oak box with back-lighting and
a hinged front for access. Helping with the installation
are: (l-r) my father; Richard Vogel, my brother; Gregory
A.J.Vogel, Pat Boat; the construction foreman for the new
wing, and myself.

A 26 inch diameter panel which was commisioned
by a seminary here in Austin as a retirement gift for a
professor there. It contains many symbols and references to
his life and work. This is the most intricate piece I've
done. Usually I have from 20 to 40 pieces/square foot. This
one has over 90/square foot!
